Description

Captured ship: Le Furet of Morlaix (commander Jean Claude Marie du Portal, signing 'Duchelles Dufortal' or Duchelles Portail').

History: a French privateer (25 tons, 10 guns, 36 men, formerly the English ship Ferret (master John Engledue)), bound from Morlaix on a cruise; taken on 24 July 1747 by the privateer Charming Nancy (Philip Winter commanding), and brought into Jersey.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1]: two examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 2 - CP 3]: attestations and claims for ownership of Le Furet on behalf of a merchant in Bristol;
  • [CP 4]: allegation;
  • [CP 5]: warrant for the release of the ship;
  • [CP 6 - CP 7]: attestation as to papers, abstracts and translations of the 5 ships' papers.

Ships' Papers:

  • SP 1-SP 2: letter of marque, muster roll;
  • SP 3-SP 5: commission granted out of the Morlaix admiralty court, customs clearance, instructions.

[Decision: cargo condemned, ship restored paying 1/2 salvage, 8 October 1747]
