Description

Captured ship: the Franklin or Frankland (master William Seares, or, as a French prize, Pierre François Dollouné).

History: an English ship (80 tons, 8 men), bound from New England to Rotterdam, laden with fish and naval stores; taken on 17 September 1745 by a French privateer of Dunkirk at the Dogger bank, retaken on 19 September by HMS Hawk (Washington Shirley commanding), and brought into Great Yarmouth.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 3]: attestation and claim on behalf of merchants in Marblehead, Massachusetts;
  • [CP 4]: allegation;
  • [CP 5-CP 7]: attestation denying the intention to smuggle goods into New England, commission to take an inventory, declaration in place of an inventory;
  • [CP 8]: attestation as to papers.

[Decision: restored paying 1/8 salvage 24 January 1746]
