Description

Captured ship: St François (commander Pierre Allemes or Allames).

History: a French privateer (25 tons, 8 guns, 29 men), bound from Dunkirk on a cruise; taken on 20 April 1748 by the privateer Eagle snow (John Bazely commanding), and brought into Dover.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation as to papers, abstract and translations of 11 of the ship's papers.

Ships' Papers, numbered SP 1-SP 14d, comprising 20 papers.

  • SP 1- SP 2d: letter of marque with four paper copies;
  • SP 3: muster roll;
  • SP 4- SP5: two letters from Louis XV to the Lord High Admiral of France, one written the other printed;
  • SP 6a- SP 6f: blank ransom bills;
  • SP 7: recruitment permit from Dunkirk;
  • SP 8- SP 11: two papers in French, two letters in Dutch;
  • SP 12- SP15: four journals kept by the master;
  • SP 13a- SP 14d: seven loose papers found inside the journals.
