Description

Captured ship: Le St François of Dieppe (master François Drouet).

History: a French fishing boat (15 men 2 boys), bound from Dieppe to the coast of Dunkirk to fish for herring; taken on 17 October 1747 near Dunkirk by the privateer York (James Gravoner commanding), and brought first into Flushing and then into Dover.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: release, affidavit concerning appraisement;
  • [CP 8]: allegation;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: attestation as to papers, abstracts and translations of the 7 ships' papers;

Ships' Papers, numbered SP 1-SP 7.

  • SP 1-SP 4: French pass, three permits issued at Dieppe;
  • SP 5-SP 6: two pages of notes, one a list of names, the other written on the back of a playing card: the five of spades, possibly used as a label when transferring cargo;
  • SP 7: muster roll.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 12 January 1748]
