Description

Captured ship: De Fortuna otherwise Fortune or De Fortuyn of Larvik (master Peder Hesselberg).

History: a Danish ship (125 tons, 9 men and 2 boys), bound from Bordeaux to Frederikshald, laden with wine and brandy; taken on 28 February 1748 by the privateer Lark (William Marsh commanding), and brought into Dover.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: attestation and claim of the master, attestation as to damage sustained by the vessel following capture;
  • [CP 8-CP 22]: attestations, affidavits, claims, translations and exhibits (including letters given on behalf of the Irish merchant Peter Fox of Limerick, now a burgher of Rotterdam, presented by Isidros Lynch);
  • [CP 23]: allegation;
  • [CP 24-CP 26]: attestation as to papers, abstracts and translations of the 16 ships' papers in French, Danish and Dutch [several of these papers were restored].

Ships' Papers, numbered SP 1,SP 3, SP 7-SP 9 only:

  • SP 1: bill of lading, issued in Bordeaux for a voyage to Frederickshald, in English;
  • SP 3: French pass;
  • SP 7-SP 9: two customs declarations, promissory note.

[Decision: part of the cargo condemned, the ship and the rest of the cargo restored as neutral, 17 May 1748]
