Description

Captured ship: La Fortune (master Jean Dordoy).

History: a French ship (48 tons,10 men), bound from Nantes to Dunkirk, laden with salt and brandy; taken on 19 August 1744 near Eddystone Lighthouse by the privateer Young Ceres (James Soper commanding), and brought into Dartmouth, then London.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1 – CP 2]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 3]: allegation;
  • [CP 4]: abstracts and translations of the eleven ship's papers;

Ships' Papers:

  • SP 1-SP 4: two bills of lading issued at Pouliquile and Nantes, a pass for the farms of Brittany, customs receipt;
  • SP 5-SP 9: bill of lading issued at Bayonne, a certificate stating the weight of the ship, customs permit from Bayonne, customs receipt from Nantes, customs permit issued at Nantes;
  • SP 10-SP 11: French pass, muster roll.
