Description

Captured ship: La Felicité (master Pierre Hardouin).

History: a French ship (45 tons, 7 men), bound from La Rochelle to Calais, laden with brandy, sugar, liquorice and wine; taken on 25 March 1744 at Beachy Head by the HMS Anglesea (John Brett commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1] - [CP 6]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit, docket;
  • [CP 7]: allegation;
  • [CP 8]: abstracts and translations of fourteen of the ships' papers;

Ships' Papers, numbered SP 1-SP 20:

  • (SP 1) - (SP 14): bills of lading all issued at La Rochelle;
  • (SP 15) - (SP 20): additional papers later brought in by captain Brett's brother, who was an officer of the sick and the wounded office. Includes an inventory of goods, French pass and muster roll, all with translations.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 4 May 1744]
