Description

Captured ship: Emanuel of Drammen (master Mads Blom).

History: a Danish [Norwegian] merchant ship (70 lasts, 12 men, 2 boys), bound from Bordeaux to Rotterdam, laden with wine, prunes, honey, vinegar, turpentine, preserved sausages, grapes, anchovies, seeds and some silk damask; taken on 11/22 April 1748 between Dungeness and 'Farley' [Fairlight] by the privateer Fox (Lawrence Squier commanding), and brought first into the Downs and then into Dover.

Documents:- Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 6]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, attestation as to papers including a statement of his suspicions by Squier, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 7]: attestation and claim of the master;
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: attestation and claim for goods of Hamburg merchants;
  • [CP 10-CP 16]: 7 sets of attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities of Hamburg, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Dordrecht, and Zierikzee, and brought into court in March 1748;
  • [CP 17]: abstract and translation of the 29 ship's papers [these papers were restored].
