Captured ship: Elizabeth (master William Stevens).
History: an English merchant ship (40 tons, 4 men, 1 passenger), bound from Campvere [Veere, Netherlands] to Peel, Isle of Man, laden with wine, tobacco stalks, oilskins, tea and a china tea service, and provisions [for the voyage] but with no flag, no watch glasses [sand-glasses used to measure watch times] and no idea where to find the Isle of Man; seized on 25 December 1746/ 5 January 1747 between Dunkirk and the North Foreland, on suspicion of smuggling by HMS Shark (Christopher Middleton commanding) and the privateer York (James Gravener commanding), and brought into Dover.
