Description

Captured ship: Elizabeth of Pennsylvania (master William Hurst).

History: an English merchant ship (a New England-built brigantine, 100 tons, 2 carriage guns and 2 swivel guns) bound from Cape Fare in America [Cape Fear?], laden with pitch, tar and staves; taken on [1/12 June] 1745 by the French privateer Maurepas [who crewed it with 8 French man and 1 Englishman], retaken on 5/16 June 1745 in latitude 49º30 by HMS Captain (Thomas Griffin commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.

Documents:- Court Papers:

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories, three examinations of the prize crew, attestation as to papers (some letters to English merchants were the only papers found, and these had been handed over in Portsmouth for delivery), and commissioners' affidavit [1 document];
  • [CP 2]: allegation;
  • [CP 3]: attestation and claim as belonging to John Jones and Co of 'Pennsilvania in Maryland'

[Decision: restored paying 1/8 salvage, 5 September 1745]
