Description

Captured ship: Le Dauphin de France of Bayonne (master Simon Daragorry, former master Dominique Lauga).

History: French merchant ship (210 tons, 45 men and 7 passengers), bound from Vera Cruz via Havana to La Rochelle, laden with cochineal, jollup, indigo, hides, tortoise-shell and snuff; taken 6/17 August 1743 between 46° and 47°, 13 leagues from Belle Isle by HMS Captain (John Byng commanding), and brought into Spithead.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: old indenture re-used as wrapper for above;
  • [CP 7-CP 12]: standing interrogatories with an additional interrogatory, four examinations answering the additional interrogatory, commissioners' affidavit; ;
  • [CP 13]: old indenture re-used as wrapper for above;
  • [CP 14-CP 15]: two allegations;
  • [CP 16]: attestation of papers;
  • [CP 17]: abstract and translations of the ship's papers numbered 1 to 28.

Ship's Papers: numbered 1-33, including:

  • no. 31: journal kept by Daragorry when second captain and then captain of Le Dauphin de France, 21 June/1 July 1742 to 6/17 August 1743;
  • no. 33: a volume containg Daragorry's journals when in La Reine des Anges 1730-1731, Le Vainqueur 1731-1732, and Le St François 1733-1734.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 6 October 1743]
