Description

Captured ship: Le Dartmouth (master Louis Pinochet).

History: French merchant ship with a letter of marque (360 tons, 53 men) bound from Bordeaux via Lorient to Isle de France (Mauritius) laden with wine, brandy, flour, planks, provisions and tar; taken on 3/14 May 1747 by HM Sloop Falcon (Richard Gwynn commanding) of Admiral Anson's squadron [at the first battle of Cape Finisterre], and brought to Spithead.

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories;
  • [CP 2-CP 4]: three examinations;
  • [CP 5]: commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegations;
  • [CP 7-CP 10]: attestations of papers;
  • [CP 11]: translation and abstract of ship's papers nos. 1 to 10, and A to D.

Ship's Papers:

  • nos. 1 to 10: ten letters from Michel Wailsh [Walsh] to Louis Pinochet, 1746-1747. No.2 reports Wailsh bringing Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, back from Scotland.
  • A to D: accounts and expenses for bread, provisions etc, 1746-1747.
