Description

Captured ship: Le Comte de Lowendahl of Dunkirk (commander Pierre Lefevre called Jouin le Père, formerly commanding the St Michel privateer).

History: a French privateer (300 tons, 20 carriage guns, 14 swivel guns, 172 men), bound from Ostend on a cruise to Brest; taken on 4/15 March 1747 in latitude 48º about 7 leagues north of Ushant by HMS Hampton Court (Savage Mostyn commanding), and allegedly HMS Hastings (Robert Wellard commanding) and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 5]:allegation by HMS Hampton Court;
  • [CP 5A]: attestation that HMS Hampton Court is and has been at sea;
  • [CP 6]: allegation for joint capture by HMS Hastings;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: special interrogatories by both Mostyn and Wellard [with 8 examinations in HCA 13/91];
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: two releases;
  • [CP 11]: allegation by HMS Hastings;
  • [CP 12]: release;
  • [CP 13]: attestation as to a witness;
  • [CP 14]: account as to sales, 1750;
  • [CP 15-CP 16]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and two translations of the 8 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers, marked SP A-SP B and SP 1-SP 6. (SP 6 is a paper from the Hector of Charleston (master James Rogers), April 1746.
