Description

Captured ship: Le Cheval Marin (master Andreas Cassar).

History: a Danzig ship (350 tons, 14 men), bound from Bourgneuf to Danzig, laden with salt and brandy: taken on 28 April/9 May 1748 by the privateer Fox (Lawrence Squire commanding), and brought into the Downs, and then into the River Thames.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations taken at Deal, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation and claim of the master;
  • [CP 6A]: attestation taken in Danzig, and translation, of 6 Danzig merchants, owners of the ship and cargo;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: commission of appraisal, and inventory;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: translation and exhibit from Nantes;
  • [CP 11]: attestation taken and sealed by the ruling authorities of Danzig;
  • [CP 12]: allegation;
  • [CP 8-CP 10]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translations of the 24 ship's papers [which were restored].
