Description

Captured ship: St Claire of Nantes (master Pierre Birgan or Birgant or Biergam).

History: a French merchant ship (100 tons, 4 guns, 18 men), bound from Fort Dauphin, Saint Domingue to Nantes, laden with sugar, coffee, indigo and skins; taken on 21 June/2 July 1747 in 47º30 by HMS Eagle (George Bridges Rodney commanding), and brought into the Downs.

  • [CP 1- CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations taken at Deal, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation that on bringing the ship inito the River Thames, she struck on the Woolpack Sand and is leaking badly, so that the cargo needs to be unloaded;
  • [CP 7]: allegation;
  • [CP 8-CP 10]: two attestations as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 20 ship's papers.
