Description

Captured ship: Commercium otherwise Commerce, formerly the Milenor (master John Peter Clavier). [First capture].

History: a Hamburg ship (200 tons, built in New England, 12 men), bound from Bayonne to Hamburg, laden with sugar, coffee, ham and bacon; taken on 20/31 May 1747 off Farley [Fairlight] in England by the privateer Endeavour (Robert Crouscual commanding), and brought into Dover.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: attestation and claim;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: two sets of attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities in Bremen;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: a set of attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities in Hamburg, including in [CP 10] duplicates of eleven bills of lading;
  • [CP 11-CP 13]: attestation as to papers, and abstracts and translations from French and from Dutch and High German of the 28 ship's papers [which were restored].
