Description

Captured ship: Charles Town pink of Exeter (master Nicholas Wills, though nominally Thomas Whitborn).

History: an English merchant ship, bound from Oporto to London, laden with oil, red wine, white wine, port wine, lemons, China oranges and cork; taken in early 1744 by a Spanish privateer and sent into Muros, Galicia, retaken from the harbour there by HMS Wolf (Samuel Lofting commanding), and brought into Oporto.

  • [CP 3-CP 4]: attestation and claim on behalf of Thomas Coleman of Topsham;
  • [CP 5]: attestation by Thomas Coleman and Nicholas Wills that the latter had walked from Muros to Oporto, arriving a week before the Charles Town was brought in by a prize crew from HMS Wolf;
  • [CP 6]: a bill of sale for the ship, in Newfoundland, 1737;
  • [CP 7]: allegation;
  • [CP 8]: letter of attorney of several claimants;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: attestation and claim for cargo;
  • [CP 11]: further claim for cargo;
  • [CP 12]: attestation as to claims;
  • [CP 13-CP 14; CP 15-CP 16; CP 17-CP 18]: three sets of attestations and claims for cargo;
  • [CP 19-CP 20]: attestation by Lofting, and account of the sale of the ship and cargo in Oporto, January 1744.

[Decision: restored paying 1/8 salvage 30 May 1744]
