Description

Captured ship: Catharina Johanna of Rotterdam (master Hendrick van Holm, a Swede).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (150 Dutch lasts, 23 men), bound from Cadiz to Ostend or Dunkirk, laden (in response to a public printed advertisment displayed at the Exchange at Cadiz) with wine, oil, wool, cochineal, indigo, lemons, chocolate, olives, tobacco snuff, silver, other goods and a Spanish mat, and the master's own adventure; taken on 29 May/9 June 1747 off Calais by the privateer St Michael (John Mitchell commanding), and brought into the Downs.

  • [CP 1-CP 6]: standing interrogatories, four examinations taken at Deal, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 7]: attestation and claim by the master;
  • [CP 8]: allegation, 14 July 1747
  • [CP 9]: attestation as to papers;
  • [CP 10]: abstract and translation [32pp] of the 132 ship's papers and 8 books, and a note of a bundle of letters to Van Holm of no moment; endorsed by the master that all had been delivered back to him, 28 June 1749;
  • [CP 11-CP 12]: two further abstracts and translations.

Ship's Papers: one paper remains - now SP A: a pass issued by the British Consul at Lisbon for Charles La Lee, his wife, five children, servants and baggage, for safe passage from Cadiz to Dunkirk on the Catharina Johanna.

[Decision: cargo condemned, 13 July 1747, but appealed, and ship and cargo then restored]
