Description

Captured ship: Catherina Elizabeth otherwise Catrina Elizabet of Middelburg (master Nicholaas Robijn or Nicholas Robyn).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (130 Dutch lasts, 16 guns) with a French master, bound from Dunkirk to Bordeaux, laden with pantiles, bricks, coal, tin, pitch, tar, white lead and tobacco piipes, but suspected of contraband; taken on 18/29 April 1747 between Dover and Calais by the privateer Endeavour (Edward Croswell commanding), and brought into Dover.

  • [CP 14-CP 16]: attestation that Dutch ships using the Straits trade (via Gibraltar) always carry guns and ammunition for defence against the Tangier row boats, with a printed sale inventory of the Catherina Elizabeth at Amsterdam, in Dutch, from August 1746, and a translation - see also CP 26 and SP 10;
  • [CP 17]: attestation as to the Catherina Elizabeth still being in good condition;
  • [CP 18-CP 19]: two allegations, 1748;
  • [CP 21-CP 22]: letter of attorney and translation;
  • [CP 23]: attestation as to papers;
  • [CP 24 -CP 26]: abstract and translations of the 21 ship's papers.

    • Drie Vrienden or Three Friends (master Walter Kelly), July-October 1746 [pp 280-299;
    • Elizabeth and [sic], 15-16 April [1747] [p 300];
    • navigation exercises [pp 402-426];
    with SP 13/A a pass of December 1743 issued at Cork to David and another, late of the King of Denmark;
  • SP 14: ship's accounts;
  • SP 15, a small blank book, is not here.
