Description

Captured ship: La Catherine of Bordeaux (master Martin Vivié or Vivier, otherwise Martin Pechie).

History: a French merchant ship bound from Saint Domingue to Bordeaux in company with the Society (master John Chapie), the Aimable [Martha] (master Raymond Mondavy), and the Printemps (master Jacques Girouard) and escorted by the Etoile (Offre commanding) and a privateer taken by the Etoile, laden with sugar, hides and indigo; taken on 21 June/2 July 1747, being driven ashore at Laxey Bay [Enseada de Laxe] near Cape Finisterre by Admiral Peter Warren's squadron, and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 4]: standing interrogatories, two examinations (including one of Benjamin King, late of the privateer Grayhound of New York (Richard Jefferys commanding) which had been taken by the Etoile), commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 5]: allegation;
  • [CP 6]: attestation to the leaky nature of the ship, and damage to the cargo;
  • [CP 7] attestation as to papers.

Ship's Papers, numbered SP 1-SP 20: apparently working papers (with some doodles), relating to voyages and trade between Bordeaux and St Domingue, belonging to Jean Pelletan [second master?] and others of La Catherine of Bordeaux, from 1735 to the date of captuure; many torn or burned, and others damaged by becoming attached to the sticky cover of a notebook over time. These papers may not be in the right order.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 1 September 1747]
