Description

Captured ship: St Clement of Nantes (master Michel le Pape).

History: a French merchant ship (250 tons, 45 men), bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to Nantes, laden with sugar, indigo and coffee; taken in fight on 27 February / 9 March 1745 by the privateer Charming Nancy (John Luce commanding) and brought into Jersey.

  • [CP 1]: three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 2]: allegation;
  • [CP 3] attestation as to papers, originally attached to 6 unnumbered letters in transit [now numbered SP 66-SP 71];
  • [CP 4]: letter from the commissioners about further papers and new regulations;
  • [CP 5]: abstract and translation of the first 65 ship's papers and mail in transit.

Ship's papers and mail in transit: numbered SP 1-SP 71.
