Description

Captured ship: St Bonaventure (master Louis Minvielle).

History: a French merchant ship (100 tons, 19 men) acting as supply ship for the French navy and bound from Acadia to Rochfort; taken on 29 November/10 December 1746 by HMS Monmouth (Henry Harrison commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: letter from Harrison about his earlier retention of the signal books, as useful in deceiving or decoying the French), and abstract and translation of the 6 ship's papers.

Ship's papers, now numbered SP 1-SP 6, including at nos 5- 6 the printed day and night signals for the Duc D'Anville's squadron.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 4 February 1747]
