Description

Captured ship: La Boa Ventura formerly Le Cheval Marin (master Pedro Martin dos Santos).

History: a Portuguese merchant ship (90 tons, 9 men) bound from Bayonne to Nantes, laden with rosin and tar [gives details of 2 years of voyages]; taken on 26 September/7 October by the privateer Postilion (John Morgan commanding), and brought into Topsham.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations taken at Exeter, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: claim;
  • [CP 7]: draft act;
  • [CP 8]: allegation;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: two attestations as to papers;
  • [CP 11-CP 12]: two abstracts and translations of the 9 ships papers [of which 6 were restored].

Ship's Papers, now numbered SP 1, SP 3 and SP 8.

[Decision: part of cargo condemned, the ship and rest of cargo restored as neutral, 12 December 1747]
