Description

Captured ship: St Blaise (master Jean Viollet).

History: a French merchant ship (250 tons, 38 men) bound from Cyprus and Alexandretta via Malta to Marseilles, laden with silk, wool, drugs, cotton galls, and other merchandise; taken on 2/[13] January 1748 in latitude 37 twenty leagues off Malta by the privateer Constantine [of Bristol] (John Read commanding), and brought first into Malta and then into Leghorn [Livorno].

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, two examinations of the captors taken at Bristol on 27 July 1748, commissioners' affidavit, release of interest;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation as to papers (the ship's pass was left at Leghorn to condemn her; a parcel of private merchants' letters was also left), and abstract and translation of the remaining 69 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers, now numbered SP 1-SP 69 [67 bills of lading, 2 manifests].

[Decision: condemned as prize, 6 September 1748]
