Description

Captured ship: Santa Barbara y Santa Anna (master Eugenio Bernardino, sometimes using the fictitious name Francisco da Costa as he had a French pass for that name).

History: a Portuguese merchant ship (70 tons, 7 men), (formerly the Industry of Topsham, taken by France, condemned and sold at Morlaix), bound from Morlaix to Lisbon, laden with linen cloth, hides and paper; taken on 19/30 March 1748 in latitude 45°30 by the privateer Hawk (Joseph Buckley commanding), and brought into Bristol.

  • [CP 12]: attestation as to perishing nature of the cargo;
  • [CP 13]: attestation as to the plunder of the crew's personal possessions (clothes, books, instruments, weapons) committed by the captors
  • [CP 14-CP 16]: abstract and translation of 3 Portuguese exhibits;
  • [CP 17-CP 18]: abstract and translation of 1 Portuguese exhibit;
  • [CP 19]: claim;
  • [CP 20]: allegation;
  • [CP 21-CP 23]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the French papers, and of the Portuguese papers, comprising the 53 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers, now numbered SP 1-SP 53, including mail in transit.
