Description

Captured ship: La Bacquencourt of Boulogne (master André Delamer).

History: a French privateer (a dogger, 60 tons, 6 carriage guns, 14 swivel guns, 65 men) on a cruise from Cherbourg; taken on 23 December 1746/3 January 1747 five leagues south west of the Isle of Wight by HMS Porcupine (Hon Augustus Hervey commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 3 ship's papers.

Ship's papers, now marked SP A-SP C, including at C the captain's contract with his officers and crew.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 4 February 1747].

Note: Hervey described his subterfuges in capturing this ship in his private journal (apparently including the use of a distress signal): see Augustus Hervey's Journal, David Erskine ed, (1953), pp46-47.
