Description

Captured ship: Anna smack (master Hans Piers).

History: a Dutch merchant ship bound from La Rochelle to St Valery, laden with brandy, vinegar and cotton; taken on 14/25 July 1747 by HMS Fly sloop (Thomas Cookson commanding) and brought into Mounts Bay.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 3]: two examinations taken at Penzance, and commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 4-CP 5]: attestation for claimant, and claim of the master for the ship and cargo;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation, and abstract and translation of the 41 ship's papers, originally including 15 letters 'of not the least moment'; annotated with a receipt by Crespigny of all the papers not required by the court [to be restored].

Ship's Papers: of the original 41 papers, only 9 remain:- SP1, SP2, SP3, SP10, SP11, SP38, SP39, SP40 and SP41.

[Decision: ship restored, cargo condemned as prize, 8 October 1747]
