Description

Captured ship: L'Aimable Vainqueur of Le Havre, formerly Nestor (master Jean Baptiste Morchoisne).

History: a French merchant ship (200 tons, 10 guns, 28 men) bound from Martinique to Le Havre, laden with sugar, indigo, cotton, tortoiseshell, hides, coffee, and silver pieces of eight; taken on 25 April 1744 two leagues off the Start by HMS Mortar (Thomas Hanway commanding) and brought into Portsmouth.

  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7]: abstract and translation of two sets of ship's papers, numbered 1-30 [now A1-30] and 1-12 [now B1-12]

Ship's Papers: 42 papers, now numbered

  • A1-A30, mostly bills of lading with a cover [A 31];
  • B1-B12.
