Description

Captured ship: L'Aimable Martha of Bordeaux (master Raymond or Raymen Mondavy).

History: a French merchant ship bound from Saint Domingue to Bordeaux, laden with sugar and indigo, under convoy with three other such ships; taken on 21 June / 2 July 1747 (by being driven ashore at Cape Finisterre, their privateer escort burned and the merchant ships refloated), by Admiral Sir Peter Warren's squadron, and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers [several are wrongly annotated as relating to Les Aimable Marthes of Bordeaux, master Réaud]:-

  • [CP 1-CP 4]: standing interrogatories, two examinations (including that of Robert Day of the English [American] privateer Greyhound of New York, which had been taken by the French privateer Etoile or Star, escorting the convoy), and commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 5]: attestation that ship was leaking;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: attestation, and abstract and translation of 5 papers.

Ship's Papers:

  • SP 1, a bill of lading;
  • SP 2-SP 5, the personal archive of Jean Dumas, second pilot, comprising (2, 3, 4) 3 letters and (5) his journal of the voyage in L'Aimable Martha, owned by Messrs Dubergier Père et Fils, 19 February 1746-1 July 1747 (NS).
