Description

Captured ship: L'Auguste (commander Anthony Baubriand or Baubriant).

History: a French naval ship (500-600 tons, 50 guns, 452 men), on a cruise from Brest; taken in fight on 9/20 February 1746 by HMS Portland (Oliver Stephens commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examniations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7]: abstract and translation of the 4 ship's papers.

Ship's Papers:-

  • A-B: commissions;
  • C: muster roll;
  • D: this document is missing, but is identified in [CP 7] as an agreement with M Fournier to fit out the ship.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 14 April 1746]
