Description

Captured ship: St Antonio of Agde (master Pierre Austry).

History: first capture: a French ship (a polacre, 8 men), bound from Tenerife to Port Louis or Rotterdam, laden with Canary wine, orchilla [a dyestuff from the Cape Verde Islands] and campeche wood, claiming protection by HM's pass; taken off Bayonne in August 1743 by HMS Anglesea (John Brett commanding) and HMS Fly (Thomas Williams commanding) and the ship was brought into the River Thames.

  • [CP 1-CP 8]: standing interrogatories, questions in French, notes as to whom particular questions should be put, wrapper, two affidavits by the master; [four examinations are in HCA 13/90];
  • [CP 9]: claims of Dutch merchants;
  • [CP 10]: attestation as to the perishing condition of the cargo;
  • [CP 11-CP 12]: allegation;
  • [CP 12-CP 13]: commission of appraisement, and appraisement;
  • [CP 14]: allegation;
  • [CP 15-CP 15A]: attestation with a translation of five bills of lading;
  • [CP 16]: a translation of six more bills of lading;
  • [CP 17]: attestation as to the following papers;
  • [CP 18-CP 38]: translations of the papers and letters marked A-W, some with attestations of delivery to the court [see the Ship' Papers for D-W, but the original papers A-C are not there].

Ship's papers: the papers were sent in separate instalments from Oporto to Brett's brother Charles Brett of the Sick and Wounded Office, in London [which has confused the numbering];

  • [SP 1-SP 5]: the five bills of lading referred to in CP 15 and CP 15A;
  • [SP 6] a journal in English kept by Thomas McCragh of the Sally and Molly, February 1742-July 1743; annotated 'Saint Antonio polacra' and 'No 6'.
  • [SP 7- SP 12]: six more bills of lading, referred to in CP 16;
  • [SP D-SP K]: papers marked D-I, K [I and J being treated as the same letter];
  • [SP L-SP U]: letters marked L-U;
  • [SP W]: account book marked W.
