Description

Captured ship: Anna Galley (master Klaas Hartog otherwise Claes Hartog).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (80 tons, 6 guns, 12 men) bound from Amsterdam to Santa Cruz, Tenerife, laden with cables, anchors, chests of flax, linens and other fabrics, iron bars, hoops and tiles, and other commodities, including a parrot in a cage; taken on 3/14 November 1740 within cannon shot of the Canary Islands by the privateer Vernon sloop (Peter Bonamy commanding), and brought into Bristol.

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories, three examinations taken at Bristol, special interrogatories on behalf of the Vernon, six more examinations taken at Bristol, commissioners' affidavit (filed as one booklet), 13-17 January 1741;
  • [CP 2]: claim on behalf of Pieter Robyn merchant of Amsterdam, 20 January 1741;
  • [CP 3-CP 6]: two sets of abstracts and translations of the 69 ship's papers [the ship's papers were restored], translation of a letter by Robyn, and the account of John Harrison, the translator, January 1741;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: commission for appraisment of the cargo, with an inventory of the cargo, February 1741;
  • [CP 9]: letter from Claude Crespigny to the court: having read the annexed letters in French or Spanish, he found nothing relevant [the letters are not here - restored?], March 1741;
  • [CP 10-CP 11]: notarised copies of two documents in Dutch, March 1741;
  • [CP 12]: further claim by Pieter Robyn for linens, June 1741;
  • [CP 13]: allegation of Robyn and the owners, June 1741;
  • [CP 14-CP 15]: two attestations, that Bonamy the captor is now in Guernsey, and that one of the merchants standing bail for him as a privateer has gone bankrupt, November 1741;
  • [CP 16-CP 21]: commission for the examination of witnesses at Bristol (13 August 1741); substitution of proctor; copy of the allegation containing further interrogatories on behalf of Pieter Robyn and other Dutch owners, and a schedule of damages; 21 examinations taken at Bristol, September 1741, and commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 22-CP 43] illuminated commission (with an image of George II) for the examination of witnesses at Amsterdam (13 August 1741); copy of the allegation and further interrogatories on behalf of Pieter Robyn and other Dutch owners, and a schedule of damages; 9 examinations in Dutch taken at Amsterdam, October 1741; affidavit and 9 translations; August-November 1741.
  • [CP 44-CP 46]: three envelopes sending the examinations.
