Description

Captured ship: L'Aventurier (master Mathieu Vincent).

History: a French privateer (60 tons, 10 guns, 6 swivel guns, 45 men), formerly the English merchant ship Mercury (master Charles Bell); taken on 17/28 May 1747 off the Start by HMS Surprise (James Webb commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: claim and attestation for the ship as the Mercury, bound from Falmouth to Venice, laden with pilchards; taken on 28 November 1746 by the French privateer L'Heureux of St Malo (Pottier commanding), and brought into St Malo.
  • [CP 8]: allegation;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: attestation as to papers, and translation and abstract of the ship's papers.

Ship's Papers marked SP A and SP B.

[Decision: ship restored paying 1/2 salvage, cargo condemned as prize, 7 July 1747]
