Description

Captured ship: St Antoine of Dieppe (master Clair Adelus).

History: a French ship bound from the Newfoundland fisheries, laden with 16,000 codfish and oil; taken on 27 October 1744 about eight leagues south of the Start by the privateer Dover (James Gravener commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6]: affidavit by Beal Jones, lieutenant of the privateer, that the St Antoine carried a false journal;
  • [CP 7]: memorandum by Joshua Manger, commanding the privateer Grand Duke of London, that he has ransomed the Marie Anne of Dieppe (master Germain Le Hoeby?) and endorsed A, Clair Adelus;
  • [CP 8]: wrapper;
  • [CP 9]: allegation.

[Decision: condemned as prize, 1 December 1744]
