Description

Captured ship: St Anthony otherwise San Antonio e l'Anime del Purgatorio (master Michael Synnott or Francesco Della Casa).

History: an English merchant ship (120 tons) with Genoese pass and an ostensible Genoese master, to secure clearance from Spain; bound from Spain to England laden with wine, oil, figs; seized in Plymouth in [April] 1740 by HMS Weymouth (Lord Aubrey Beauclerk commanding) and brought into the River Thames.

  • [CP 1-CP 3] : attestation and claim of Thomas Sykes merchant of London as owner of the ship and cargo, and an Admiralty order for release of ship and cargo (because of its perishable nature) to Sykes on bail of £6,000 (double its value), May 1740;
  • [CP 4-CP 7]: the abstract of 25 ship's papers, translation of several of them, and a wrapper, endorsed with note of 7 May that 25 ship's papers and 4 books were brought into court - with a note 'see the books in the Prize Box'; and note of delivery to Della Casa of the books and 10 papers under a court order of 3 July; and receipt for the rest of the papers under a court order of 17 July;
  • [CP 8]: schedule of the papers restored to Della Casa on 3 July.
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: allegation and affidavit of Thomas Sykes, 2 and 24 June 1740.
