Description

Captured ship: St Ambrose or St Ambrosio (master Francisco Manoel de Lima).

History: a Portuguese merchant ship [150 tons, 16 men] bound from Lisbon to Madeira and the Canary Island, thence to London or Amsterdam, coming into Dover in distress, and there seized on 5 October 1740 by HM Customs on suspicion of carrying Spanish goods (130 pipes of Canary wine, unloaded because of damage to the ship).

Documents:-

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: attestation by HM Customs and Isaac Minet merchant of Dover;
  • [CP 3- CP 8]: notarised affidavit of the master, with translations of the 4 ship's papers [these papers were restored];
  • [CP 9]: letter from the Duke of Newcastle, 28 November 1740, ordering release and the cessation of HCA proceedings;
  • [CP 10]: wrapper.

[Decision: restored as neutral, 1 December 1740]
