Description

Captured ship: L'Affriquain otherwise L'Africain or African of Nantes (master François Thiercelin or Tiercelin).

History: a French merchant ship with letters of marque (150 tons, 36 men) in the Guinea slave trade, bound from Martinique to Nantes, laden with sugar and coffee; taken on 11/18 March 1745 in latitude 45°N by the privateers Shoreham (Robert Milligen commanding) and Lowestoft (Charles Fielding commanding) and brought into Bantry Bay and Kinsale.

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: three examinations and commisioners' affidavit (one document), and attestation that no papers were found except a piece of a journal;
  • [CP 3]: attestation to perishable nature of sugar;
  • [CP 4-CP 5]: affidavit made in Lisbon by Robert Milligan that the papers of the captured ship Concorde comprising sea briefs, charter parties, bills of lading, cockets, letters and other documents were lost by accident while being transferred back to the prize in bad weather off Cape Clear; pinned to an explanation that the lost papers belonged to the Africain, not the Concorde, being captured close in time;
  • [CP 6]: allegation;
  • [CP 7]: abstract and translation of 15 ship's papers.

Ship's papers: numbered SP 1-SP 15.
