Description

Captured ship: Annette othwerwise Annatte or Annate of Nantes (master Louis de Ratieville otherwise Pierre de Reteville).

History: a French merchant ship (previously an English prize) with a letter of marque, bound from Nantes to Martinique, laden with beef, wine, flour and cloth; taken on 20/31 October 1747 in latitude 40º by HMS Centurion (Peter Denis commanding) with the East India Company ships (with letters of marque) Pelham, Augusta and Walpole in convoy, and brought into Portsmouth.

Court papers in a contested cause:

  • [CP 1-CP 6]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, attestation, commisioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 7]: attestation as to the state of the cargo;
  • [CP 8-CP 10]: allegations on behalf of HMS Centurion, and for joint capture by the East India Company ships Pelham and Augusta;
  • [CP 11-CP 30]: special interrogatories, several examinations taken at Portsmouth, August 1748, commission, etc, sealed;
  • [CP 31-CP 43]: 3 allegations, ten releases, 1749;
  • [CP 44]: abstract and translation of the 3 ship's papers.

Ship's papers: numbered SP 1-SP 3.

[Decision: condemned as prize to the Centurion, 1 December 1747]
