Description

Captured ship: Anna Cornelia (master Jan Hogg - born in East Lothian, Scotland, now of Rotterdam).

History: a Dutch merchant ship, bound from Marseilles, Cette and Malaga to Dunkirk and Middelburg, laden with brandy, wine, oil, olives, cotton yarn and almonds (and with private adventures by the master of luxury goods and clothing); taken on 17/28 August 1747 by the privateers Swallow (Henry Staffell commanding) and Prosperous (Solomon Currier commanding) and brought into Dover.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 6]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commisioners' affidavit, attestation;
  • [CP 7]: translations and abstracts of the Dutch papers (nos 21, 22, 31-38, 40 were the master's archive of journals - some in English, notebooks, letters from his wife etc (no 28 'A bundle of letters ... from the master's wife and others, none of moment';
  • [CP 8]: translations and abstracts of the French papers (nos 1-20, 23-35);
  • [CP 9-CP 11]: allegation, claim and master's attestation, with schedule of goods claimed as his.

Ship's Papers, originally 1-40: of these, SP 1- SP 20, SP 22, SP 25-SP 35, and SP 39 are still here; these are the French numeration in the 20s and 30s. An endorsement on the report notes that [Dutch ?] nos 28-35, 38 and 40 were 'among the large bundles with a loose parcel of papers' [and were restored with the ship].

[Decision: ship and part of cargo restored as a Dutch ally, rest of cargo condemned as prize, 30 September 1747]
