Description

Captured ship: Andreas (master Henderik Steenkamp).

History: a Prussian merchant ship (formerly the Susanna), allegedly bound from Cork to Lisbon, laden with beef, tallow and butter, but suspected of trading with France; taken on 21 August 1747 by the privateer Sandwich (James Gaul commanding) and brought into Penzance.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commisioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: allegation, claim for ship and freight;
  • [CP 8]: attestation and translations of the 11 ship's papers from the High German, Swedish, Danish and Dutch languages [3 of these were restored].

Ship's papers, numbered SP 1-SP 11 [but not 1, 7 or 10].

[Decision: ship restored as neutral, cargo condemned, 8 October 1747]
