Description

Captured ship: St André of Bordeaux (master Pierre Gautier).

History: a French merchant ship (350 tons, 40 men, 10 guns) bound from Martinique to Bordeaux, laden with sugar and coffee; taken in fight, having fired about 45 shot, on 4 June 1745, about 45°50 north by the privateers Boscawen (George Walker commanding) and Sheerness (John Furnell commanding), and brought into Bristol. [This was one of the five 'Martinicomen' taken in the same action, the others being L'Abraham of Nantes (Jacques Berthomé, master), La Belle Louise of Bordeaux (Jean Fromentin, master), Le Duc de Guienne (Pierre Lestourniere, master) and La Victoire (René Brulé, master).]

  • [CP 1-CP 5] standing interrogatories, three examinations, commisioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6] allegation;
  • [CP 7-CP 8] attestation and translated abstract of some of the ship's papers.

Ship's papers:-

  • Bundle A: now numbered A1-A21;
  • Bundle B: now numbered B1-B18.

Master's Archive:-

  • [Bundle C]: now numbered C1-C16. [These papers, which were on this ship at the time of capture, were subsequently mixed up by the captors with papers from the other ships in the convoy. They were sorted out and put here in January 2018.]
