Description

Envelope mounted on card divider item 64 with typed caption on front, 'Locomotion No 1' containing five postcards of 0-4-0 locomotive built to the specifications of George Stephenson for the Stockton and Darlington Railway by R Stephenson and Company [and extensively modified by Timothy Hackworth], see also items 55, 57-64 and 66/7:

1A) Monochrome postcard, preserved 'Locomotion' with printed notes on reverse outlining its history, published [c.1950] for Railway Museum York by B Matthews (Photo Printers) Ltd, same image as sub-item 3, 9cm x 14cm.

1B) Colour postcard attached to item 1A, 'Locomotion' preserved on plinth at [Bank Top Station] Darlington [County Durham] with printed notes on reverse outlining its history, published by J Arthur Dixon [image c.1955- 1960], 10cm x 15cm.

2) Monochrome postcard, model of 'Locomotion' [made by T A Common and presented to the Science Museum London in 1936] with printed caption on front outlining the history of the locomotive, Science Museum postcard No 4 published by Real Photographs undated, 9cm x 14cm.

3) Monochrome postcard with printed caption on front, '1153 'Locomotion' No 1 the world's first passenger engine which ran between Stockton and Darlington towns now served by the LNER [London and North Eastern Railway]' and further printed notes on reverse outlining its history, published [c.1923-1947] in The Regent Series, same image as sub-item 1A, 9cm x 14cm.

4) Colour tinted postcard with printed caption on front, 'Engine No 1 Darlington Station', 'Locomotion' preserved on plinth at [Bank Top Station] Darlington [County Durham] published by W H Smith [image c.1900], 9cm x 14cm.
