Orders to the military garrison in Gibraltar issued from the Town Major's Office, dealing largely with administrative matters.
The orders record the following aspects of the life of the military garrison: arrival and departure of units and troopships; arrival and departure of individual officers; details of guards and working parties to be provided; matters of discipline and courts martial; administrative matters including accommodation; supply of rations; promotions and appointments; and parades.
From 1981 Ministry of Defence
At the time of its cession to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in July 1713 Gibraltar was already a military fortress. Under the British the original Moorish 12th century walled town developed into a fortress encompassing a modern naval base of world importance, with attendant garrison, coastal and underground defences and, more recently, sophisticated anti-aircraft systems.
