Folio(s) 420-424. Letter [folios 423-424] to the Master of the Rolls [Sir Richard Arden, MP for Bath] from Philip George, Deputy Town Clerk, Bath [Somerset], asking him, on behalf of the mayor, to pass the enclosed copies of threatening letters to the Home Secretary. He reports that the brewery of Messrs Williams had been totally burnt down on 8 March. As well as the buildings and a large stock of beer, more than 20,000 bushels of barley and malt had been destroyed, the total loss being estimated at more than £20,000. A further attempt on 12 March near the brewery of Messrs Smith had been discovered before the fire could take hold. The Mayor has authorised a reward of £100 from the Corporation for the discovery of those responsible, payable on conviction, in addition to those offered by the brewers and insurance offices.
Enclosed are copies of anonymous letters [folios 420-421] to Messrs Smith and Co and Messrs Sayce and Co stating that their respective premises would be burnt down.
