Description

Prisoner name(s): George Edwards.

Prisoner age: 28.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court [Old Bailey] November Sessions 1838.

Crime: Stealing a horse and chaise, property of Henry Pritchard.

Initial sentence: Ten years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character not known.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil; pardoned 31 October 1843.

Petitioner(s): Six petitions from the prisoner with the earliest being undersigned by the 12 members of the jury and others by 11 people.

Two petitions from George Smith (solicitor for the family).

Three petitions from Henry Pritchard (prosecutor) one of which is a copy.

Richard Baker (family friend).

J O Zillwood (rector of Compton near Winchester).

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): First offence; previous good character; respectable family; son of a clergyman; recommended for mercy by the jury and prosecutor; started training in medicine; good conduct on board Leviathan; distress of family members especially mother and elderly grandmother; sentence too severe; lawyer did not make court aware of all the facts at the trial; prisoner been ill since confinement.
