Description

Prisoner name(s): Dennis Donovan.

Prisoner occupation: Bricklayers' labourer.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court [Old Bailey] December Sessions 1838.(or 3 January 1839)

Crime: Wounding his wife Catherine Donovan on 21 October 1838 at 33 Bowling Street, Clerkenwell.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil; must be transported in the regular way.

Petitioner(s): Mary Lane, (prisoner's landlady) John Carney and Luke Lane undersigned by 45 people.

Two petitions from Catherine Donovan (prisoner's wife).

Daniel Donovan (prisoner's brother) undersigned by William Cubitt (prisoner's employer).

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Wife was constant drunkard; unable to care for two young children; she provoked the attack; head injuries already caused by earlier fight at a gin shop; three petitioners were willing to testify at trial that wife drunk at time of attack but were not called; prisoner a sober peaceful man; family will be sent to workhouse without his support.

Additional Information: Prisoner on board Leviathan.

In last petition wife requests her husband be transported to Bermuda if has to leave the country.
