Description

Prisoner name(s): James Dixon alias James Piper.

Prisoner age: 27.

Court and date of trial: Kent Quarter Sessions Maidstone October 1838.

Crime: Stealing 40 shillings from Richard Martin of Cuxton, Kent on 26 January 1836 in The Watermans Arms Rochester.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character notoriously bad; in prison before for vagrancy.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): William Piper and Elizabeth Piper (prisoner's foster father and mother) undersigned by 31 inhabitants of Maidstone.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Prosecutor feels sentence too severe; prosecutor was also drinking with the group which included prisoner when crime alleged to have taken place; lost money as result of betting game not stolen; a witness Elizabeth Giles who could prove this was not called at trial; not represented properly by lawyer.
