Description

Prisoner name(s): Richard Fisher; Richard Bonner.

Prisoner age: Fisher aged 11.

Court and date of trial: Fisher: Chelmsford Assizes December 1826; Bonner: Lewes Winter Assizes 1826.

Crime: Fisher: stealing in a dwelling house a watch value £4 from Robert Hale Manley, Surgeon; Bonner: horse stealing.

Initial sentence: Fisher: death commuted to 14 years transportation; Bonner: death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Bonner to be transported; free pardon prepared for Fisher 1 December 1829.

Petitioner(s): Fisher: Robert and Ann Fisher of Barking Essex, parents and 67 people; the prosecutor R H Manley and 42 people -Ministers and inhabitants of Barking, Essex; Bonner: Richard and Mary Bonner of Brighton, parents.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Fisher: poor but honest parents; parents have 8 other children; no previous crime; good character; has been in custody three years; conduct good during this time; Bonner: father served in the 35th Regiment of Foot for 21 years; wife from a respectable family; Richard only child left of many.

A letter from O Lodge, Curate, stating that Fisher is to be apprenticed to a fisherman in Barking.

John Harris' father is willing to take Fisher as an apprentice.

A letter from William Tate to the Dean of Brighton dated 17 April 1827 stating Bonner's conduct has been good.

Lord Conyngham to Mr Capper supporting Bonner's case.
