Description

Prisoner name(s): Samuel Needs (Neads).

Prisoner age: 17.

Court and date of trial: Gloucestershire Summer Assizes 1825.

Crime: Highway robbery - assaulting and robbing Mr Abraham Golding.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Let the law take its course'; nil.

Petitioner(s): Thomas Neads, father and the convict and 14 people including the prosecutor;

2 petitions from Thomas Neads, father of convict.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Prisoner was in bad company when robbery was committed; father has a wife and seven children and has always lived respectably; father promises son will behave in future; father asks for him to be kept in the country; first offence.

Other papers: A letter from R Hart Davis supporting the petition.

Additional Information: Francis Cains alias Bush tried with Neads.
