Description

Prisoner name(s): Cain Mahoney; William French.

Prisoner age: Mahoney age 34; French age 39.

Prisoner occupation: French was a pauper in Chatham Workhouse.

Court and date of trial: Both Kent Summer Assizes held at Maidstone 1825.

Crime: Mahoney: felony; - stealing a gown from Sarah Turner and a towel from Thomas Coulson of Sydenham; French: felony (acquitted) - assaulting Charlotte French his wife and cutting her leg with intent to kill.

Initial sentence: Mahoney found insane at time of arraignment and to be kept in custody 'until his Majesty's pleasure be known'. French acquitted on grounds of insanity.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Send them to Malling'; warrant of discharge and answer 23 November 1837.

Other papers: A warrant for the removal of the prisoners to West Malling Place dated 6 August 1825.

List of criminal lunatics held in Maidstone Gaol on 7 August 1825 signed by Thomas Agar, Keeper.

An Order of Maintenance on the parish of Chatham from the Visiting Magistrates, James Jacobson and Thomas Augustus Douce, and adjudication of settlement of William French.

An Order of Maintenance on the parish of Chatham from the Visiting Magistrates, James Jacobson and Thomas Augustus Douce, on Cain Mahoney ordering the Treasurer of the County of Kent to pay his weekly maintenance 30 August 1825.

A warrant for the removal of William French to the County asylum - he is to be kept there until the King's pleasure be known 8 May 1834.

William Daniel Tysson, Visiting Justice asking for the removal of the lunatic (French) to the County Asylum and for a maintenance order on the Parish of Chatham, Kent, 24 May 1834.

G Poynder Medical Superintendent of the County Asylum declaring French sane 13 August 1835 with a certificate to that effect signed by J G Welch;

A letter from Mr Poynder stating that French is now sane and enclosing a warrant of his commitment and a certificate of his sanity 7 November 1835.

A letter from R Neuruder stating that Mrs French is living in Sittingbourne with a Mr Smith.

A letter from Mr Poynder enclosing the above - French has heard nothing of his wife since being in custody 19 November 1835.

A letter from Jonathan Buttanshaw, Chaplain of Kent Lunatic Asylum that it is 'safe and politic that he [French] should be set at liberty' 10 September 1837.

A letter from Edward Jefferys with information about Mrs French 11 September 1837.

Certificate of sanity signed by John Welch and George Poynder that French is sane 26 September 1837.

A letter from William Tysson, [Lord] Brecknock, James Jacobson, Thomas Turner Atkin, James and Stoddard Douglas and E H Lushington reminding [Lord John Russell] of William French's case.

Certificate of the Medical Officers of the Kent Lunatic Asylum John Welch and George Poynder that William French is not likely to relapse into insanity if released 20 October 1837.

William Tysson to Mr Maule enclosing the above 26 October 1837.
